ToggleVietnam imported iron and steel to the tune of US$891 million in March, up from US$680 million in February, a change of 31 percent, according to preliminary data from Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.
Year to date, Vietnam had imported US$2,605 million worth of iron and steel by the end of March.
China accounted for US$367 million of Vietnam’s iron and steel imports in March, up from US$248 million in February, a change of 47.82 percent. Year to date, imports from China reached US$1,061 million.
Indonesia followed with US$140 million in March, down from US$164 million in February, a change of 14.65 percent. Year to date, Vietnam has imported US$521 million worth of iron and steel from Indonesia.
Japan recorded US$130 million in March, up from US$79 million in February, a change of 64.17 percent. Year to date, imports from Japan totalled US$307 million.
India posted US$90 million in March, up from US$43 million in February, a change of 109.07 percent. Year to date, Vietnam has imported US$178 million worth of iron and steel from India.
South Korea rounded out the top five with US$77 million in March, down from US$96 million in February, a change of 19.87 percent. Year to date, imports from South Korea reached US$298 million.

Embattled steel maker looking to expand into other sectors
Local steel maker, SMC Investment Trading Joint Stock Company, proposed a major capital increase to repay debt and support restructuring plans through 2026–2031.
The company plans to raise about VND368 billion (US$13.97 million) from a rights issue to repay loans and supplier debt.
It also plans to restructure its operations and expand into sectors including digital infrastructure, housing, renewable energy, and green logistics. Read more→
Provisional anti-dumping rates for Chinese steel
Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade imposed a provisional anti-dumping duty of 27.83 percent on certain wide hot rolled steel imports from China.
The measure applies to products with widths between 1,880mm and 2,300mm, following findings of circumvention of existing trade defence measures. Read more→
