Chemical imports scrutiny complaints

The US-ASEAN Business Council has raised concerns that some customs units are imposing full disclosure requirements, including CAS codes and concentration levels on chemical imports.

Businesses have said full disclosure risks exposing trade secrets and increasing costs and delays, and have called for clear, consistent rules across the system.

Vietnam’s chemicals industry

Vietnam’s chemicals industry underpins key manufacturing sectors including plastics, textiles, agriculture, and electronics, with demand closely tied to industrial output and export activity.

The country remains heavily reliant on imports for upstream chemical inputs, particularly from regional suppliers, while domestic production is concentrated in basic chemicals and fertilisers.

Rising industrialisation, foreign investment, and supply chain diversification are driving steady growth in chemical consumption across both export-oriented and domestic industries.

Regulatory oversight, environmental standards, and energy costs continue to shape investment and expansion in the sector, particularly for higher value-added and specialty chemicals.
