Vietnam exports to Japan down 24.03 percent February 2026 MoM / textiles and garments -22.68%, phones 30.24%

In February, Vietnam exported US$1,922 million worth of goods to Japan, down 24.03 percent over January, according to preliminary data from Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.

So far this year, Vietnam has exported US$4,453 million worth of goods to Japan.

Vietnam exported US$268.99 million worth of textiles and garments to Japan in February, down from US$347.89 million in January, a change of 22.68 percent.

It also exported US$254.25 million worth of phones to Japan in February, up from US$195.22 million in January, a change of 30.24 percent.

Vietnam exported US$212.06 million worth of other means of transportation, parts and accessories thereof to Japan in February, down from US$302.35 million in January, a change of 29.86 percent.

It also exported US$195.39 million worth of machinery, equipment, tools, and instruments to Japan in February, down from US$245.99 million in January, a change of 20.57 percent.

Vietnam exported US$144.41 million worth of computers to Japan in February, down from US$185.17 million in January, a change of 22.01 percent.

Vietnam’s trade with Japan YTD

In February, Vietnam imported US$1,872.41 million worth of goods from Japan and exported US$1,922.22 million to Japan, for total trade worth US$3,794.63 million, and leaving a trade surplus of US$49.81 million.

Two-way trade so far this year between Vietnam and Japan has reached US$8,668 million, with Vietnam importing US$4,215 million worth of goods and exporting US$4,453 million worth of goods.

Japan carbon capture project

PVN and Japanese partners have proposed a carbon capture and storage project in Nghi Son with estimated investment of VND50,000 billion (US$1.90 billion).

The project would capture carbon dioxide emissions from major industrial sources and store them in offshore geological formations.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested Japan to supply crude oil from its reserves and facilitate aviation fuel sales to Vietnam amid Middle East supply disruptions.

Japan exits LNG project in Hai Phong

Japan Petroleum Exploration (Japex) has decided to exit a proposed liquefied natural gas terminal project in Nam Dinh Vu Industrial Park, Hai Phong City, following feasibility studies that began in January 2022.

Japex, through its affiliate ITECO Joint Stock Company, cited economic challenges and said it will transfer its shares to its business partners. Read more→

Vietnam-Japan trade relations

Vietnam and Japan have built a long-standing economic partnership, underpinned by trade, investment, and development cooperation.

Bilateral trade has been supported by agreements such as the Vietnam–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement and broader regional frameworks, reducing tariffs and facilitating market access.
