ToggleIn December, Vietnam exported US$2,346 million worth of goods to Japan, up 0.17 percent over November, according to preliminary data from Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.
So far this year, Vietnam has exported US$26,766 million worth of goods to Japan.
Vietnam exported US$397.01 million worth of textiles and garments to Japan in December. This was up from US$382.32 million in November, a change of 3.84 percent.
It also exported US$290.16 million worth of other means of transportation, parts and accessories thereof to Japan in December. This was up from US$267.77 million in November, a change of 8.36 percent.
Adding to that, Vietnam exported US$232.59 million worth of machines, equipment, tools and instruments to Japan in December. This was up from US$226.61 million in November, a change of 2.64 percent.
It also exported US$194.55 million worth of wood and wooden products to Japan in December. This was down from US$195.65 million in November, a change of -0.56 percent.
Vietnam also exported US$183.82 million worth of computers, electrical products, and spare-parts to Japan in December. This was up from US$172.26 million in November, a change of 6.71 percent.

Vietnam trade with Japan
In December, Vietnam imported US$2,252.17 million worth of goods from Japan and exported US$2,345.55 million to Japan, for total trade worth US$4,597.72 million, and leaving a trade surplus of US$93.38 million.
Two-way trade so far this year between Vietnam and Japan has reached US$51,443 million, with Vietnam importing US$24,677 million worth of goods and exporting US$26,766 million worth of goods.

Recent developments involving the two countries include:
Japan’s Daiwa increases holding SSI
Daiwa Securities Group Inc. exercised rights to buy more than 63.4 million shares of joint stock company SSI Securities on January 8, according to the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange.
The Japanese group raised its holding from 15.263 percent to 15.265 percent, remaining the largest shareholder of SSI.
Nuclear power Russia not Japan
Vietnam will stop negotiations with Japan on cooperation to invest in the Ninh Thuan 2 nuclear power plant, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said on January 7.
The prime minister instructed the Ministry of Industry and Trade to formally notify Japan.
Japanese eyewear retail
Japanese eyewear brand OWNDAYS opened a new store on the ground floor of Sense City Pham Van Dong shopping centre in Ho Chi Minh City.
OWNDAYS said the store offers prescription glasses and sunglasses in a minimalist Japanese design, with free eye tests and on site fitting services.

Vietnam-Japan trade relations
Vietnam and Japan established diplomatic relations in 1973 and have since expanded cooperation through trade, investment and development assistance.
Bilateral trade has been underpinned by frameworks including the Vietnam–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement and regional agreements, supporting Japan’s role as a major investor and trading partner of Vietnam.
