Vietnam textile & garment exports down 6.48 percent in November, down .69 percent to USA

Vietnam exported textiles and garments to the tune of US$2,973 million in November, down from US$3,179 million in October, a change of -6.48 percent, according to preliminary data from Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.

Year to date, Vietnam had exported US$35,913 million worth of textiles and garments by the end of November.

The USA accounted for US$1,314 million worth of Vietnam’s textiles and garments exports in November. This was down from US$1,323 million in textiles and garments exports in October, a change of 0.69 percent. Year to date, Vietnam has shipped US$16,122 million worth of textiles and garments to the USA.

After the USA was Japan making up US$382 million worth of Vietnam’s textiles and garments exports in November. This was down from US$442 million in textiles and garments exports in October, a change of 13.47 percent. Year to date, Vietnam has shipped US$4,188 million worth of textiles and garments to Japan.

Next was South Korea taking US$141 million worth of Vietnam’s textiles and garments exports in November. This was down from US$258 million in textiles and garments exports in October, a change of 45.33 percent. Year to date, Vietnam has shipped US$2,667 million worth of textiles and garments to South Korea.

Following South Korea was the Netherlands representing US$124 million worth of Vietnam’s textiles and garments exports in November. This was down from US$129 million in textiles and garments exports in October, a change of 3.99 percent. Year to date, Vietnam has shipped US$1,234 million worth of textiles and garments to the Netherlands.

Rounding out the top five was China constituting US$108 million worth of Vietnam’s textiles and garments exports in November. This was up from US$100 million in textiles and garments exports in October, a change of 7.93 percent. Year to date, Vietnam has shipped US$1,258 million worth of textiles and garments to China.

Recent developments in textiles and garments in Vietnam include:

Strike action garment factory

Hundreds of garment workers at Thien Dieu Company in Dai Dong Commune, Phu Tho Province stopped work on 2 December to protest what they described as inappropriate behaviour by a Chinese supervisor.

Workers said they were frequently shouted at and fined for small mistakes.

Local authorities said they intervened the same afternoon, with the commune’s People’s Committee, police and the company’s grassroots union mediating between the two sides.

According to officials, the supervisor agreed to adjust his behaviour and workers returned to their jobs.
