Vietnam wood and wooden products news
Recent developments in wood and wooden products in Vietnam include:
Wood tariff delays
The United States has delayed a planned increase in import tariffs on wood and wood products, giving Vietnam’s timber sector temporary relief through 2026, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The ministry said US President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation postponing higher tariffs on finished wood products under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 from January 1, 2026 to January 1, 2027.
Vietnamese authorities said the move provides exporters with breathing space to stabilise orders and prices, but warned that tariff risks remain as outcomes will depend on ongoing trade negotiations.
Trade challenges
At a Ministry of Industry and Trade seminar in Hanoi, Industry representatives warned that some export sectors, including wood products, face a development “trap”, with rising volumes but weak margins and limited capital accumulation.
Trade experts also cautioned that exporters face stricter sustainability, environmental and supply-chain standards, while many firms remain slow to proactively use free trade agreements.
