Fruits and vegetables exports from Vietnam down 29.36 percent in October, China and USA top buyers

Vietnam exported fruits and vegetables to the tune of US$927 million in October, down 29.36 percent over September, according to preliminary data from Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.

Year to date, Vietnam had exported US$7,057 million worth of fruits and vegetables by the end of October.

In October, Vietnam’s top export destination for fruits and vegetables was China, accounting for US$666 million worth. This was down 37.54 percent over September. Year to date, Vietnam has shipped US$4,521 million worth of fruits and vegetables to China.

After China, the USA was the next biggest buyer of fruits and vegetables from Vietnam. There was US$48 million worth of fruits and vegetables shipped from Vietnam to the USA in October, a jump of 9.76 percent. Its total for the year to date is now sitting at US$455 million.

South Korea was also a major buyer, with US$27 million worth of fruits and vegetables shipped to the country from Vietnam in October. This was a up 8.82 percent compared to September, for a total of US$264 million for the year so far.

Rounding out the top five was Japan spending US$19 million on Vietnam’s fruits and vegetables, a -2.89 percent change for a total of US$201 million for the year, and Australia with US$14 million, a 19.74 percent change month-on-month, for a total of US$115 million.

Nafoods Group JSC (NAF) produces and exports fruit concentrates, frozen fruits, and agricultural products.

NAF closed at VND 33,850 on Friday down 0.6 percent with 5,677,000 shares traded, worth VND 19,405 million.

Foreign ownership in NAF is currently capped at 122.7 percent, with current foreign ownership sitting at 19.6 percent.

National Seed JSC

National Seed JSC (NSC) produces, researches, and distributes crop seeds including rice, corn, and vegetables.

NSC closed at VND 78,900 on Friday up 0.9 percent with 1,000 shares traded, worth VND 8 million.

Foreign ownership in NSC is currently capped at 49.0 percent, with current foreign ownership sitting at 9.5 percent.

Southern Seed Corporation

Southern Seed Corporation (SSC) researches, produces, and trades agricultural seeds such as rice, corn, and vegetables.

SSC closed at VND 31,100 on Friday down 0 percent with 0 shares traded, worth VND 0 million.

Foreign ownership in SSC is currently capped at 49.0 percent, with current foreign ownership sitting at 0.8 percent.

Durian testing prosectutions

It was reported in early November that the Ministry of Public Security charged 17 people, including business leaders and testing centre heads, over fraud in Vietnam’s durian exports to China.

An industry representative says laboratories sold testing certificates, allowing unqualified fruit to pass export checks.
