Vietnam-USA trade news
These are some of the most recent developments in the Vietnam-USA trading relationship.
US-Vietnam trade framework agreement
The United States and Vietnam have agreed on a Framework for an Agreement on Reciprocal, Fair, and Balanced Trade to deepen their bilateral economic relationship, the two countries have said in a statement.
The agreement will see Vietnam grant preferential access for nearly all US industrial and agricultural exports, while the US will maintain a 20 percent tariff rate on Vietnamese goods and apply zero tariffs to selected products.
United Airlines to Ho Chi Minh City
United Airlines, one of the three largest US carriers, has resumed service to Ho Chi Minh City after more than a decade.
The airline announced on 27 October that it will operate daily flights linking Ho Chi Minh City with Los Angeles and San Francisco via Hong Kong.
United previously flew to Vietnam between 2007 and 2012 following the 2003 US-Vietnam air services agreement.
US Defense Secretary in Hanoi
Vietnamese Defence Minister Phan Van Giang and US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth met in Hanoi to discuss expand cooperation in defence industry, cybersecurity, and post-war recovery.
Both sides emphasised trust-building and regional stability through collaboration on training, dioxin cleanup, and MIA recovery.
The US pledged US$130 million or VND 3.43 trillion for dioxin remediation in Bien Hoa, bringing total grants to US$430 million or VND 11.33 trillion.
Vietnam-USA trade relations
Vietnam and the United States established diplomatic relations in 1995.
Trade normalisation and Vietnam’s accession to the World Trade Organization in 2007 deepened commercial ties, with two-way trade expanding rapidly across garments, electronics, agriculture, and machinery.
The countries signed a Bilateral Trade Agreement in 2000 and later strengthened cooperation through the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework and initiatives on clean energy, semiconductors, and digital trade.
The 2023 elevation of relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership signalled shared priorities in innovation, supply chain resilience, and sustainable economic growth.
