Rice exports to decrease

Vietnam plans to reduce rice export volumes from 2026 as part of a strategy to prioritise higher quality and higher value shipments, amid prolonged global oversupply and weak prices.

Industry officials said global rice supply has accumulated a surplus of an estimated 7 to 8 million tonnes over recent years, limiting price recovery prospects in 2026, especially for low and mid grade rice.

The Vietnam Food Association said export volumes are planned to fall to around 4 million tonnes by 2030, with exporters shifting toward premium varieties such as ST25, Japonica and fragrant rice for higher value markets.

Vietnam’s rice industry

Vietnam is one of the world’s largest rice producers and exporters, with rice cultivation concentrated in the Mekong Delta and Red River Delta.

The crop plays a central role in food security, rural employment, and export earnings, with production dominated by smallholder farmers.

Vietnam’s rice exports are primarily destined for Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, and include both low-cost white rice and higher-value fragrant varieties.

In recent years, policy has increasingly focused on quality, sustainability, and climate resilience as salinity intrusion and extreme weather affect key growing regions.
