Vietnam’s rice industry

Vietnam is one of the world’s largest rice producers and exporters, with cultivation concentrated in the Mekong Delta and Red River Delta, supported by dense irrigation networks and smallholder farming.

The industry plays a central role in food security and rural employment in Vietnam, with production geared toward both domestic consumption and export markets in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Vietnam’s rice sector has increasingly shifted toward higher-quality and specialty varieties, including fragrant and low-emission rice, to improve export value and competitiveness.

Policy priorities focus on sustainability, climate resilience and traceability, as producers adapt to salinity intrusion, changing weather patterns and stricter import standards in key markets.
