Vietnam-Malaysia news

Recent developments involving the two countries include:

Opinion: Vietnam tourism v. Malaysia

Tuoi Tre published an opinion piece in December in which the author argues that Malaysia’s tourism success shows that mass appeal does not require alcohol, nightlife or sensitive entertainment, but strong organisation and spending design.

He says Malaysia attracts and retains visitors by deliberately directing tourist spending into shopping, culture, food and curated experiences, supported by clear pricing and modern infrastructure.

The piece contrasts this with Vietnam, especially Ho Chi Minh City, where tourists arrive in large numbers but lack attractive, well-linked places to spend money.

Vietnam-Malaysia trade relations

Vietnam and Malaysia established diplomatic relations in 1973 and have steadily expanded economic ties alongside broader Association of Southeast Asian Nations integration.

Trade relations are underpinned by regional frameworks including the ASEAN Free Trade Area and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, which both countries have ratified.

Bilateral trade has grown consistently over the past decade, with Malaysia a key source of electronics, petroleum products, and machinery for Vietnam, and Vietnam exporting agricultural products, electronics, and manufactured goods.

The relationship has gradually evolved from basic trade into wider cooperation covering investment, supply chains, and industrial development, supported by regular high-level exchanges and business links.
