Vietnam-USA news
Recent developments involving the two countries include:
Wood tariff delays
The United States has delayed a planned increase in import tariffs on wood and wood products, giving Vietnam’s timber sector temporary relief through 2026, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The ministry said US President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation postponing higher tariffs on finished wood products under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 from January 1, 2026 to January 1, 2027.
Vietnamese authorities said the move provides exporters with breathing space to stabilise orders and prices, but warned that tariff risks remain as outcomes will depend on ongoing trade negotiations.
The United States remains a key market for Vietnam’s wood exports, which reached US$16.3 billion in 2025 to mid-December, up 5.6 per cent year on year.
MMPA kicks in
Vietnam will be barred from exporting 12 groups of seafood species to the United States from January 1, 2026 if they are caught using gear such as gillnets, trawls or purse seines that are not recognised as equivalent under the US Marine Mammal Protection Act.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has granted Vietnam only partial equivalence, meaning seafood from 11 recognised fishing methods can still enter the US market if accompanied by a Certificate of Admissibility, while products from 12 unrecognised methods are banned.
Vietnamese authorities said the restrictions affect species including tuna, squid, grouper, lobster and mackerel, and urged exporters to strengthen traceability and seek alternative markets.

Vietnam-USA trade relations
Vietnam and the United States normalised diplomatic relations in 1995, laying the foundation for rapidly expanding trade and investment ties.
The Bilateral Trade Agreement signed in 2000 marked a major milestone, accelerating Vietnam’s integration into the global trading system and boosting exports to the US.
Over time, the United States has become one of Vietnam’s largest export markets, while Vietnam has emerged as a key manufacturing and sourcing base for US companies.
Trade relations have continued to deepen through supply chain integration, regulatory dialogue, and cooperation under frameworks such as the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
