Power plant sale
It was announced in early November that Japan’s Sumitomo Group had sold 50 percent of its stake in Van Phong Power Company, owner of the Van Phong 1 thermal power plant, to Thailand’s EGAT International and the Philippines’ AboitizPower, each acquiring 25 percent.
AboitizPower said it will invest about US$220 million after regulatory approvals, marking its first overseas acquisition.
Philippines rice import stop extended
Last week it was announced that Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has extended the country’s suspension of regular rice imports until the end of 2025.
The ban covers milled and well-milled rice but excludes varieties not commonly grown by Filipino farmers.
Vietnam-Philippines trade relations
Vietnam and the Philippines maintain strong bilateral trade ties under the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA).
The Philippines is among Vietnam’s key partners within ASEAN, particularly for agricultural and manufactured goods.
Vietnam mainly exports rice, machinery, textiles, and seafood to the Philippines, while importing electronics, machinery, and processed food.
Two-way trade between the countries has grown steadily over the past decade, driven by complementary economic structures and regional supply chain integration.
Both countries have expressed interest in expanding cooperation in energy, digital transformation, and logistics to further strengthen trade connectivity.
