Chinese solar factory expansion cancelled

Technode is reporting that China’s JinkoSolar has terminated a planned US$1.5 billion photovoltaic panel manufacturing project in Quang Ninh province.

The project was intended to export solar products to the United States but became unviable after the United States imposed anti-dumping duties on Vietnamese photovoltaic panels, the publication says.

CPJ on VN journalist’s arrest

The Committee to Protect Journalists has called on Vietnam to immediately release journalist Le Anh Hung, who was arrested on March 9, accused of spreading propaganda against the state.

CPJ said detaining the journalist again after his previous imprisonment represents a serious violation of press freedom.

The group added that Vietnam currently holds 17 journalists in prison, according to its data.

SBV calls for more sustainable growth policies

Dau Tu Kien Thuc is reporting that Nguyen Le Nam, Deputy Director of the Monetary Policy Department at the State Bank of Vietnam, has said that strong credit growth, which exceeded 19 percent in 2025, is supporting economic expansion but is also creating pressure on liquidity and interest rates.

He goes on to say Vietnam must rely more on fiscal policy, public investment and deeper capital markets to reduce pressure on the banking system and make growth more sustainable.

HoSE IPOs tabled

Dau Tu Kien Thuc is reporting that Vietnam’s stock market could see a wave of new listings in 2026 as companies pursue initial public offerings and transfer listings to the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE) ahead of a potential market upgrade.

Mobile World Investment’s subsidiary Dien May Xanh plans to sell up to 179.5 million shares, while LPBank Securities also plans an initial public offering of nearly 142 million shares.

Other expected listings include Kafi Securities, Highlands Coffee and subsidiaries of Hoang Anh Gia Lai, while several firms such as F88, VGR, BVL, HAC, ABS and BMS are preparing to move from UPCoM or HNX to HoSE.

Heineken partner profit

VnExpress is reporting that Saigon Trading Group (SATRA) reported 2025 revenue of VND 62,050 billion (US$2.35 billion), up 5.4 percent year on year and slightly above its annual target.

Profit exceeded VND 11,700 billion (US$444.2 million), up 8.7 percent from the previous year and reaching 105 percent of the company’s plan.

Fuel price stabilisation fund used / remaining

Dan Tri is reporting that Vietnam’s fuel Price Stabilisation Fund held about VND 5,617 billion (US$213.2 million) across 27 fuel distributors as of September 2025.

Recent disbursements in March show hundreds of billions of dong being spent by major firms to subsidise fuel prices.

Vietnam National Petroleum Group’s balance fell from VND 3,088 billion (US$117.2 million) to VND 2,799 billion (US$106.2 million).

Vietnam Oil Corporation Joint Stock Company reported a negative balance that deepened from VND 138.42 billion (US$5.25 million) to VND 342.17 billion (US$13.0 million).

If the PSF runs out

Nguoi Lao Dong is reporting that officials have said the government may advance contingency budget funds if the Fuel Stabilisation Fund (PSF) runs out while global fuel prices are still elevated.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade is also considering additional measures, including reductions to environmental protection taxes on fuel.

Carlsberg Vietnam 2025 US$30+ million loss

Nha Dau Tu is reporting that Danish brewer Carlsberg reported a 2025 loss of VND 810 billion (US$30.7 million) in Vietnam despite generating VND 15,700 billion (US$595.8 million) in revenue.

Vietnam was Carlsberg’s sixth largest market globally but its worst performing by profit, with sales declining at a low double-digit rate.

The company attributed the decline to intense competition, distribution restructuring and flooding in central Vietnam that disrupted sales.

Starbucks at top of Fansipan

Inside Retail is reporting that Starbucks has opened its highest coffeehouse in Asia at the Sun World Fansipan Legend tourism complex near Sa Pa in northern Vietnam.

The store is located 3,063 metres above sea level on Mount Fansipan, the highest peak in Vietnam.

Biofuel production max 40% needs

Vietnam Plus is reporting that domestic production capacity of biofuels is limited, with six ethanol plants able to meet only about 40 percent of demand even if all operate at full capacity.

Industry groups estimate Vietnam will need to import roughly 700,000 to one million cubic metres of ethanol annually, mainly from the United States and Brazil, when mandatory biofuel blending comes into effect in June.

Election day

VnExpress is reporting that about 72 million voters had cast ballots by 4 pm on March 15 in Vietnam’s elections for the 16th National Assembly and local People’s Councils.

National turnout reached 93.19 percent, though Ho Chi Minh City recorded a lower participation rate of about 80.07 percent, the lowest among major localities.
