Recent news about Vietnam and Japan trade and investment.
Japan warning on Vietnam petrol bike ban
Japan’s government and major motorbike manufacturers have warned Vietnam that Hanoi’s planned 2026 ban on petrol-powered motorbikes could cause job losses and disrupt a US$4.6 billion market dominated by Honda.
In letters reviewed by Reuters, the Japanese embassy and a motorcycle trade group urged Vietnam to adopt a gradual roadmap for electrification to avoid bankruptcies among suppliers and dealers.
VPBank Japan finance
VPBank Securities (VPBankS) has secured a syndicated loan worth US$200 million arranged by Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC).
This marks VPBankS’s largest international financing to date, following a US$125 million deal in May, bringing its total foreign capital raised in 2025 to US$400 million. The funds will support key business areas including investment banking and margin lending.
Power plant sale
Japan’s Sumitomo Group sold a 50 percent of its stake in Van Phong Power Company, owner of the Van Phong 1 thermal power plant, to Thailand’s EGAT International and the Philippines’ AboitizPower, each acquiring 25 percent.
AboitizPower said it will invest about US$220 million after regulatory approvals, marking its first overseas acquisition.
Sumitomo will retain 50 percent and continue joint operations to ensure stable power supply and pursue energy transition goals.
Vietnam-Japan trade relations
Vietnam and Japan have developed one of Asia’s most comprehensive economic partnerships.
Japan is one of Vietnam’s largest trading partners, major investors, and providers of official development assistance (ODA).
The two countries signed the Vietnam–Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (VJEPA) in 2008, which reduced tariffs on a wide range of goods and strengthened cooperation in services, investment, and technology transfer.
Their partnership was further deepened through multilateral frameworks such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
Bilateral trade now covers machinery, electronics, auto parts, textiles, and agricultural products.
Japan continues to play a crucial role in Vietnam’s infrastructure and energy development, reflecting a shared commitment to stability, digital transformation, and supply chain resilience in the Indo-Pacific.
