Vietnam’s imports of computers, electrical products, spare parts and components fell by 1.35 percent month-on-month to US$13.94 billion in September, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.
Year-to-date imports totalled US$109.98 billion, maintaining electronics as one of the country’s largest import categories.
China remained Vietnam’s leading supplier at US$4.85 billion, down 0.83 percent from August.
Imports from South Korea rose 4.34 percent to US$3.59 billion, while Taiwan shipments fell 2.11 percent to US$2.24 billion.
Japan contributed US$855 million, a 4.51 percent decline.
The United States followed with US$455 million, down 2.17 percent.
Among smaller partners, Singapore rose 24.21 percent to US$100 million, while Ireland and Israel fell 9.46 percent and 37.03 percent respectively.
Imports from Belgium surged 388.32 percent, and Canada jumped 208.75 percent, though from low bases.
Vietnam’s computer and computer parts manufacturing industry has become a key component of its fast-growing electronics sector.
The country produces laptops, desktops, circuit boards, and components such as semiconductors, hard drives, and peripherals for major global brands including Dell, HP, Samsung, and Intel.
Most production is export-oriented, with the US, EU, Japan, and China among the main markets.
Growth has been driven by strong foreign direct investment, low production costs, and Vietnam’s integration into global supply chains through trade agreements like the CPTPP and EVFTA.
Major manufacturing hubs include Bac Ninh, Thai Nguyen, Ho Chi Minh City, and Binh Duong, where large industrial parks host both foreign and domestic firms.
Challenges include limited local supply of high-tech components, dependence on imported materials, and competition from regional peers.
Nonetheless, ongoing investment in skilled labour, infrastructure, and semiconductor development is positioning Vietnam as an increasingly important base for computer and electronics manufacturing in Asia.
