Fabrics imports into Vietnam, down 1.93 percent in November, China and South Korea top suppliers

Vietnam imported fabrics to the tune of US$1,257 million in November, down from US$1,281 million in October, a change of -1.93 percent, according to preliminary data from Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.

Year to date, Vietnam had imported US$13,763 million worth of fabrics by the end of November.

China accounted for US$845 million worth of Vietnam’s fabrics imports in November. This was down from US$874 million in fabrics imports in October, a change of 3.31 percent. Year to date, China has shipped US$9,400 million worth of fabrics to Vietnam.

After China was South Korea making up US$121 million worth of Vietnam’s fabrics imports in November. This was up from US$100 million in fabrics imports in October, a change of 20.29 percent. Year to date, South Korea has shipped US$1,263 million worth of fabrics to Vietnam.

Next was Taiwan contributing US$116 million worth of Vietnam’s fabrics imports in November. This was down from US$118 million in fabrics imports in October, a change of 1.27 percent. Year to date, Taiwan has shipped US$1,397 million worth of fabrics to Vietnam.

Following Taiwan was Japan representing US$61 million worth of Vietnam’s fabrics imports in November. This was down from US$68 million in fabrics imports in October, a change of 10.94 percent. Year to date, Japan has shipped US$665 million worth of fabrics to Vietnam.

Rounding out the top five was Thailand constituting US$19 million worth of Vietnam’s fabrics imports in November. This was down from US$19 million in fabrics imports in October, a change of 0.20 percent. Year to date, Thailand has shipped US$210 million worth of fabrics to Vietnam.

Damsan Joint Stock Company (ADS) produces and exports yarn, fabric, and textile materials, with operations concentrated in Thai Binh Province.

ADS closed at VND 8,170 on Wednesday up 0.07 percent with 242,000 shares traded, worth VND 197 million.

Foreign ownership in ADS is currently capped at 50.0 percent, with current foreign ownership sitting at 0.2 percent.

Mirae

Mirae Joint Stock Company (KMR) manufactures textile and nonwoven fabric products used in apparel, medical, and hygiene industries.

KMR closed at VND 2,980 on Wednesday down 0.01 percent with 230,000 shares traded, worth VND 69 million.

Foreign ownership in KMR is currently capped at 100.0 percent, with current foreign ownership sitting at 62.6 percent.

Recent developments in textiles and garments in Vietnam include:

Strike action garment factory

Hundreds of garment workers at Thien Dieu Company in Dai Dong Commune, Phu Tho Province stopped work on 2 December to protest what they described as inappropriate behaviour by a Chinese supervisor.

Workers said they were frequently shouted at and fined for small mistakes.

Local authorities said they intervened the same afternoon, with the commune’s People’s Committee, police and the company’s grassroots union mediating between the two sides.

According to officials, the supervisor agreed to adjust his behaviour and workers returned to their jobs.
