Vietnam coffee news
Recent developments in coffee in Vietnam include:
ASF ‘food safety scandal’
Highlands Coffee temporarily halted lotus seed and lychee drinks at some locations in Vietnam after confirming canned lotus seeds and lychees were sourced from multiple suppliers, including Halong Canfoco.
This came about after Vietnamese authorities found more than 130 metric tons of pork infected with African swine fever stored at Halong Canfoco facilities, with about two tons already processed into canned products.
Highlands foreign ownership
Highlands Coffee’s strong financial performance highlights a broader concern about Vietnamese consumer brands losing domestic ownership as they scale up, according to an article published in Dan Tri.
The tone reflects regret that a nationally recognised brand, built by a Vietnamese founder and grown largely in the domestic market, is no longer majority owned locally.
Coffee harvest expectations
Vietnam’s coffee harvest for marketing year 2025/26 is forecast by the United States Department of Agriculture to reach 30.8 million bags, up 6.2 percent from the previous year.
Robusta output is expected at 29.6 million bags and Arabica at 1.2 million bags, supported by favourable rainfall and increased farmer investment.
USDA projects exports will rise to 27.3 million bags, including 24 million bags of green coffee, while domestic consumption is expected to reach 4.9 million bags.
