ToggleIn January, Vietnam imported US$1,891.99 million worth of goods from the USA, down from US$2,269.79 million in December, a change of -16.64 percent, according to preliminary data from Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.
So far this year, Vietnam has imported US$1,892 million worth of goods from the USA.
Vietnam imported US$447.98 million worth of computers, electrical products, spare-parts and components thereof from the USA in January. This was down from US$511.64 million in December, a change of -12.44 percent.
Vietnam imported US$139.50 million worth of fruits and vegetables from the USA in January. This was down from US$307.03 million in December, a change of -54.57 percent.
Vietnam imported US$127.58 million worth of machines, equipment, tools and instruments from the USA in January. This was down from US$161.47 million in December, a change of -20.99 percent.
Vietnam imported US$125.37 million worth of plastics from the USA in January. This was up from US$112.74 million in December, a change of 11.21 percent.

Vietnam trade with the USA
In January, Vietnam imported goods worth US$1,891.99 million from the USA and exported US$13,897.73 million, bringing total trade to US$15,789.72 million and resulting in a trade surplus of US$12,005.75 million.
Two-way trade so far this year between Vietnam and the USA has reached US$15,789.72 million, with Vietnam importing US$1,891.99 million worth of goods and exporting US$13,897.73 million.

Recent developments involving the two countries include:
US countervailing duties on wood
The United States Department of Commerce issued preliminary countervailing duties on certain plywood and decorative wood products imported from Vietnam, it was reported in early February.
Preliminary subsidy rates range from 4.37 percent to 26.75 percent for mandatory respondents, while other Vietnamese exporters face a provisional rate of 15.56 percent.
The US Commerce Department preliminarily found subsidies in Vietnam’s preferential lending by state-owned banks, industrial promotion grants, and the provision of inputs at below market prices, with a final ruling due in May 2026 and no retroactive duties imposed.
MoU with US firms on crude oil supply
The Binh Son Refining has signed memoranda with several United States firms to secure crude oil supplies for the Dung Quat refinery and explore biofuel cooperation in Washington on February 3, 2026.
The agreements with Chevron, Marquis Energy and ADM Asia-Pacific Trading cover crude supply stability and potential imports of bioethanol and corn feedstock for domestic biofuel production.
The agreements are in line with attempts to ease trade tensions with the US with respect to Vietnam’s trade surplus with the country.
Vietnam-US trade negotiations
Vietnam said it is willing to increase imports from the United States, focusing on machinery, equipment, and high technology, during trade talks in Washington on February 2.
At a roundtable with the US ASEAN Business Council, Acting Minister Le Manh Hung cited aircraft purchase contracts by Vietjet and Vietnam Airlines with Boeing.

Vietnam-USA trade relations
Vietnam and the United States normalised diplomatic relations in 1995, laying the foundation for expanding trade and investment ties.
A Bilateral Trade Agreement signed in 2000 and Vietnam’s accession to the World Trade Organisation in 2007 accelerated market access and tariff reductions.
In 2023, the two countries elevated relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, signalling deeper economic and supply chain cooperation.
Trade has grown rapidly over three decades, making the United States Vietnam’s largest export market and a key destination for manufacturing and investment linkages.
