Singapore buys US$564 million of Vietnam’s exports in December, up 30.23 percent month-on-month

In December, Vietnam exported US$564 million worth of goods to Singapore, up 30.23 percent over November, according to preliminary data from Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.

So far this year, Vietnam has exported US$5,858 million worth of goods to Singapore.

Vietnam exported US$154.09 million worth of computers, electrical products, and spare-parts to Singapore in December. This was up from US$140.57 million in November, a change of 9.62 percent.

It also exported US$84.90 million worth of other means of transportation, parts and accessories thereof to Singapore in December. This was up from US$11.26 million in November, a change of 653.93 percent.

Adding to that, Vietnam exported US$78.30 million worth of machine, equipment, tools and instruments to Singapore in December. This was up from US$72.40 million in November, a change of 8.14 percent.

Vietnam also exported US$53.24 million worth of glass and glassware to Singapore in December. This was down from US$58.40 million in November, a change of -8.84 percent.

Vietnam imports from Singapore

In December, Vietnam imported US$647.64 million worth of goods from Singapore, up from US$465.67 million in November, a change of 39.08 percent, according to preliminary data from Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.

So far this year, Vietnam has imported US$6,062 million worth of goods from Singapore.

Vietnam trade with Singapore

In December, Vietnam imported goods worth US$647.64 million from Singapore and exported US$563.99 million, bringing total trade to US$1,211.63 million and resulting in a trade deficit of US$83.66 million.

Two-way trade so far this year between Vietnam and Singapore has reached US$11,919.35 million, with Vietnam importing US$6,061.63 million worth of goods and exporting US$5,857.72 million.

Vietnam-Singapore news

Recent developments in trade and investment between the two countries include:

Singapore Vinamilk divestment

Singapore’s Jardine Cycle and Carriage will sell 96 million Vinamilk shares, equivalent to 4.6 percent, to F and N Dairy Investments for VND 6.01 trillion (US$228 million).

The sale will be executed via wholly owned subsidiary Platinum Victory at VND 62,555 per share, reducing its Vinamilk stake from 10.62% to 6.02%.

Following completion, F and N’s combined ownership in Vinamilk will rise from 20.39% to 24.99%, while Platinum Victory’s board representative will step down.

US-Singapore JV soy bean plant

A US–Singapore joint venture has invested more than US$100 million to add a second soybean crushing line in southern Vietnam.

Vietnam Agriculture Limited, owned by Bunge and Wilmar International, inaugurated the new 4,000-ton-per-day line at Phu My 1 Industrial Park, raising total capacity to 7,800 tons daily.

Vietnam-Singapore trade relations

Vietnam and Singapore have maintained close trade relations since the 1990s, supported by the ASEAN Free Trade Area.

Bilateral ties were further deepened by the Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park programme, which has attracted significant Singaporean investment into manufacturing and infrastructure.

Trade between Vietnam and Singapore is also governed by multilateral frameworks including the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans Pacific Partnership and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.

Singapore is one of Vietnam’s largest foreign investors and a major trade and logistics hub for Vietnamese exports to global markets.
