Motor vehicles imports Vietnam down 10.79 percent in December, China / Thailand top suppliers

Vietnam imported motor vehicles to the tune of US$406 million in December, down from US$456 million in November, a change of -10.79 percent, according to preliminary data from Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.

Year to date, Vietnam had imported US$4,737 million worth of motor vehicles by the end of December.

China accounted for US$151 million worth of Vietnam’s motor vehicles imports in December. This was down from US$157 million in motor vehicles imports in November, a change of 3.99 percent. Year to date, China has shipped US$1,597 million worth of motor vehicles to Vietnam.

After China was Thailand making up US$86 million worth of Vietnam’s motor vehicles imports in December. This was down from US$98 million in motor vehicles imports in November, a change of 12.20 percent. Year to date, Thailand has shipped US$1,324 million worth of motor vehicles to Vietnam.

Next was Indonesia contributing US$79 million worth of Vietnam’s motor vehicles imports in December. This was down from US$101 million in motor vehicles imports in November, a change of 22.15 percent. Year to date, Indonesia has shipped US$1,103 million worth of motor vehicles to Vietnam.

Following Indonesia was Russia representing US$33 million worth of Vietnam’s motor vehicles imports in December. This was up from US$5 million in motor vehicles imports in November, a change of 608.30 percent. Year to date, Russia has shipped US$74 million worth of motor vehicles to Vietnam.

Rounding out the top five was Japan constituting US$27 million worth of Vietnam’s motor vehicles imports in December. This was down from US$45 million in motor vehicles imports in November, a change of 39.53 percent. Year to date, Japan has shipped US$288 million worth of motor vehicles to Vietnam.

Recent developments include:

Government inspection EV maker 

Hung Yen provincial inspectors included TMT Motors in a 2026 inspection plan covering investment compliance at nearly 100 enterprises, including its electric vehicle assembly expansion project.

The company partnered with SAIC GM Wuling Automobile in 2023 and sold 591 electric vehicles in 2023, 1,358 in 2024, targeting 3,404 units in 2025.

Automotive MoU Geleximco-China’s LeeKr

Geleximco has signed a cooperation agreement with China’s LeeKr Technology, giving the Chinese chassis-systems supplier a pathway into Vietnam’s fast-growing electric-vehicle market.

The memorandum of understanding covers advanced automotive chassis components and aims to deepen supply-chain integration between the two companies.

Hong Kong-Taiwan EV factory Northern Vietnam

A delegation from Hong Kong and Taiwan, with representatives from Chengling Automobile and Zhaoling Electric Vehicle, has proposed a factory investment of about US$500 million (VND 13.2 trillion) in Thai Nguyen.

The plant would produce electric motorbikes, scooters, trucks, dump trucks, trailers and specialised vehicles.
