Japan has withdrawn from Vietnam’s planned Ninh Thuan 2 nuclear power plant because the timetable is too tight, Japan’s ambassador in Hanoi has told Reuters.

Vietnam-Japan trade relations

Vietnam and Japan established trade relations in the early 1970s, with cooperation deepening through official development assistance, investment ties and expanding bilateral trade.

A major milestone was the Vietnam Japan Economic Partnership Agreement, which entered into force in 2009 and liberalised trade, services and investment.

Trade relations have been further strengthened through regional agreements such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans Pacific Partnership and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.

Japan is now one of Vietnam’s largest trading partners and investors, playing a central role in supply chains, infrastructure and industrial development.
