Wood & Wooden Products: Vietnam Imports Climb by 21.89% in May

Vietnam’s imports of wood and wooden products reached US$301.02 million in May 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents a substantial increase of 21.89 percent compared to April, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) import value to US$1.22 billion.

China remains the leading supplier, while the USA shows explosive growth:

China continued to be the primary source for these imports, with a May value of US$119.15 million, a 7.01 percent increase from April. This contributes to a commanding 42.61 percent of the total year-to-date imports. However, the most significant change comes from the USA, with imports surging by an impressive 75.48 percent to US$61.88 million in May, solidifying its position as a major and growing supplier. The USA now accounts for 14.84 percent of Vietnam’s YTD wood and wooden product imports. This trend aligns with Vietnam’s efforts to increase imports of raw wood materials from the US, such as sawn timber, logs, and veneer, partly to rebalance trade amidst potential US tariffs on Vietnamese wood exports.

Other key contributors and notable shifts:

Thailand’s imports grew significantly by 42.64 percent, reaching US$14.09 million. Brazil also saw a strong increase of 78.76 percent. Germany and Argentina also exhibited significant month-on-month growth.

Conversely, some markets experienced notable declines in May:

  • Australia saw the largest drop of 65.32 percent.
  • Italy imports decreased by 57.24 percent.
  • Finland imports fell by 45.39 percent.
  • Russia and Laos also experienced substantial decreases, both over 33 percent.
  • Canada also recorded a decline of 31.24 percent.

The overall strong increase in May’s wood and wooden product imports reflects Vietnam’s ongoing demand for raw materials to support its robust wood processing and furniture manufacturing industry, which is a significant exporter globally. The surge in imports from the USA indicates a strategic shift in sourcing, potentially in response to trade dynamics and a desire to diversify supply chains.
