Vietnam’s coal imports jump 4.64 percent in October

Vietnam’s coal imports were valued at US$461.18 million in October, reflecting a 4.64 percent rise compared to September. Year-to-date coal imports reached US$6.63 billion, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.

Indonesia remained the largest supplier, contributing US$206.47 million, marking a 36.98 percent increase month-on-month. Australia followed with US$174.98 million, showing growth of 32 percent. Imports from Laos saw a notable increase of 56.92 percent, totalling US$7.78 million.

China recorded the most significant growth, with imports surging by 205.74 percent to US$5.58 million. However, imports from Russia dropped sharply by 57.77 percent to US$31.31 million. Malaysia registered no coal imports in October, down from US$2.57 million in September.

The rise in imports from key suppliers such as Indonesia and Australia underlines Vietnam’s ongoing reliance on imported coal, despite notable reductions from other sources like Russia and Malaysia.
