Vietnam’s cement output up 4.0 percent year-on-year in Q1

Vietnam’s cement production reached 14.4 million tons in March, up from 11.1 million tons in February, showing a 1.5 percent increase compared to March 2024. Total output for the first quarter stood at 36.9 million tons, up 4.0 percent year-on-year, according to data from the General Statistics Office.

Vietnam’s cement production is a crucial part of the country’s construction and infrastructure development sectors, supporting both domestic demand and export markets. As one of the largest cement producers in Southeast Asia, Vietnam has a well-established cement industry that includes numerous large and medium-sized plants scattered across the country.

The industry is dominated by state-owned companies such as Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (VICEM), along with several private and foreign-invested companies like Lafarge Vietnam and Holcim Vietnam. These companies operate a range of cement plants, including both integrated plants and grinding stations, that process raw materials such as limestone, clay, and gypsum into cement products. The sector produces various types of cement, including ordinary Portland cement (OPC), blended cement, and specialty products for specific construction needs.

Vietnam’s cement production capacity has expanded rapidly in recent years, driven by the construction boom in both urban and rural areas. As the country continues to urbanize and invest in large-scale infrastructure projects, such as highways, bridges, and residential buildings, the demand for cement remains high. In addition to meeting domestic needs, Vietnam exports a significant amount of cement, particularly to other Southeast Asian countries, and more recently, to markets in Africa and the Middle East.

Despite its growth, the cement industry in Vietnam faces challenges, particularly in the areas of environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. Cement production is energy-intensive and contributes significantly to carbon emissions, prompting the government and companies to seek ways to reduce the sector’s environmental impact. This has led to increased interest in energy-efficient technologies, alternative fuels, and the use of industrial by-products in cement production.

In conclusion, Vietnam’s cement production industry plays a key role in supporting the country’s rapid growth and development. With a strong manufacturing base, increasing demand for construction materials, and a growing export market, the sector is poised for continued growth. However, addressing environmental challenges and improving production efficiency will be critical for maintaining the industry’s sustainability and competitiveness in the coming years.
