Vietnam’s aluminium production reached 127,500 tons in March, slightly up from 123,800 tons in February. Cumulative output for the first quarter totalled 380,100 tons, showing a 9.0 percent increase compared to March 2024 and a 6.6 percent rise year-on-year, according to data from the General Statistics Office.
Vietnam’s aluminium production is an emerging sector within the country’s manufacturing industry, driven by the demand for aluminium in various industries, including construction, transportation, packaging, and electronics. Although Vietnam does not have large-scale bauxite reserves like some other countries, it has focused on increasing its production of aluminium products through the processing of imported raw materials.
The country has made significant investments in aluminium smelting and processing facilities, with a focus on producing both primary aluminium and aluminium products such as sheets, profiles, and ingots. The Tan Rai Aluminium Plant, located in Lam Dong province, is one of the key players in Vietnam’s aluminium industry. It processes bauxite, the primary ore of aluminium, and produces alumina, which is then used to manufacture aluminium metal.
Vietnam’s aluminium production is primarily geared toward meeting domestic demand and supporting the expanding construction and manufacturing sectors. The country’s growing automotive industry also contributes to the demand for lightweight materials such as aluminium, which is favored for its strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance.
While domestic aluminium production is increasing, Vietnam still imports a significant amount of the raw material, particularly bauxite, due to the relatively small scale of its own bauxite reserves. The government has encouraged further investment in refining and smelting facilities to reduce dependence on imports and to improve the industry’s value-added production.
In conclusion, Vietnam’s aluminium production industry is still developing but has strong potential due to growing demand across various sectors. Continued investment in refining technology, expanding production capacity, and improving efficiency will be crucial for Vietnam to become a more competitive player in the global aluminium market.
