Vietnam’s imports from New Zealand declined 29.55 percent month-on-month to US$52 million in August, bringing the year-to-date total to US$527 million, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.
Milk and milk products continued to dominate trade at US$24 million, down 37.24 percent, accounting for more than half of total imports.
Fruit and vegetable imports fell 35.82 percent to US$12 million, while machinery more than doubled to US$953,000.
Imports of wood products remained steady at US$6.6 million, and chemical products dropped sharply to US$700,000.
Textiles and footwear materials also saw a mild 4.55 percent fall.
Year-to-date, milk and dairy account for 55 percent of all imports from New Zealand, followed by fruits, wood, and other agricultural or primary goods.
Of note, Vietnam–New Zealand trade has grown steadily in recent years, supported by shared membership in regional agreements such as the CPTPP and the ASEAN–Australia–New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANZFTA).
Vietnam mainly exports electronics, textiles, footwear, and agricultural products such as coffee, cashew nuts, and seafood to New Zealand, while importing dairy products, fruit, wood, and machinery.
The trade relationship benefits from complementary strengths: Vietnam’s manufacturing and processing capacity aligns with New Zealand’s strengths in agriculture and food production.
Both countries have also expanded cooperation in education, technology, and renewable energy.
