Philippines exports to Vietnam US$184 million in August: mostly computers & electronics

Vietnam’s imports from the Philippines declined 6.89 percent in August to US$184 million, bringing the year-to-date total to US$1.61 billion, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.

Computers and electrical products dominated at US$120 million, accounting for more than 60 percent of total imports despite a 4.80 percent decline from July.

Machinery and equipment rose 3.65 percent to US$31 million, while insulated wires and cables were stable at US$8.9 million.

Iron and steel products increased 19.12 percent, offsetting sharp drops in plastics, pastries, and animal fodder materials.

Imports of other products fell by more than half to US$7.4 million, reflecting lower general goods inflows.

Year-to-date, electronics remain the backbone of Vietnam’s imports from the Philippines, followed by machinery and processed metals.

Vietnam–Philippines trade has expanded steadily, making Vietnam one of the Philippines’ key partners within ASEAN.

The relationship is driven by complementary strengths: Vietnam exports rice, machinery, electronics, chemicals, and seafood to the Philippines, while importing electronics, processed foods, and industrial materials.

Rice is the most significant export, with Vietnam supplying the bulk of the Philippines’ import demand in recent years.

Trade between the two nations benefits from the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA), which lowers tariffs and streamlines customs procedures.

Both countries are also exploring cooperation in energy, agriculture, and maritime industries.

Challenges include logistics costs and regulatory differences, but the overall trend remains positive.

The partnership reflects growing intra-ASEAN integration, with Vietnam serving as a key supplier of agricultural and manufactured goods to the Philippine market.
