Thai tourist arrivals to Vietnam grow by 8.66 percent in December despite year-on-year decline

Vietnam welcomed 40,771 tourists from Thailand in December, an increase of 3,251 visitors compared to November, reflecting a month-on-month growth of 8.66 percent, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Tourism. However, Thai arrivals in 2024 reached 418,054, representing a 14.5 percent decline compared to the previous year.

Thai tourists are typically drawn to Vietnam’s urban destinations like Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, known for their bustling markets, street food, and cultural attractions. Popular leisure spots such as Da Nang and Phu Quoc also remain favourites for Thai visitors seeking short beach getaways.

Many Thai travellers opt for affordable and convenient trips, taking advantage of the visa exemptions and short-haul flights. Group tours focusing on cultural landmarks, shopping, and culinary experiences are popular, while younger tourists often prefer independent travel, exploring Vietnam’s vibrant cities and nightlife.

Key airlines, including Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, and Thai Airways, provide frequent flights connecting Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and other Thai cities to Vietnam’s major hubs. Seasonal promotions and travel packages have also contributed to the December growth.

Despite the year-on-year decline, Thailand remains an important ASEAN market for Vietnam, with opportunities for recovery through targeted campaigns and enhanced travel offerings.
