Vietnam’s natural gas industry
Vietnam’s gas industry is centred on offshore fields supplying domestic power generation and fertiliser production, with Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam) as the dominant operator.
Output is concentrated in southern basins such as Cuu Long and Nam Con Son, with gas transported via pipeline to major power and industrial hubs.
Domestic supply is under pressure from declining reserves, prompting plans to expand liquefied natural gas imports and develop new gas-to-power projects.
The sector is shaped by rising demand, infrastructure constraints, and policy priorities around energy security, diversification, and transitioning to lower-carbon fuels.
