Vietnam produced 39,000 motor vehicles in September, up 2.48 percent month-on-month, according to the latest data from the National Statistics Office.
Total output in the first nine months of 2025 reached 338,000 units, representing a 53 percent year-on-year increase, reflecting a recovery in both domestic demand and export-oriented assembly.
Motor vehicle imports
Vietnam’s motor vehicle imports reached US$401.62 million in September 2025, up 10.53 percent from August.
For the year-to-date period, imports totalled US$3.42 billion, reflecting steady demand recovery across major supply markets.
China remained the largest supplier with US$142.61 million, rising 33.99 percent month-on-month.
Car sales September
Vietnam’s auto market saw a sharp recovery in September 2025, with total sales reaching 26,291 units, up 21 percent from August but still 18 percent lower than the same month last year, according to the latest data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA).
Note, however, this only includes data from members of the association with a number of key car makers excluded. Vietnam’s Vinfast, for example.
Vietnam’s automotive industry
Vietnam’s automotive industry is one of the country’s fastest-growing manufacturing sectors, supported by government incentives and rising domestic demand.
Production focuses on passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and motorcycles, with major assembly operations by foreign automakers.
The industry benefits from Vietnam’s expanding middle class, trade agreements, and integration into ASEAN supply chains.
However, localisation rates remain low, with most key components still imported.
Long-term growth depends on infrastructure improvements, stronger supplier networks, and policies promoting electric vehicle adoption.
