Vietnam’s auto market saw a sharp recovery in September 2025, with total sales reaching 26,291 units, up 21 percent from August but still 18 percent lower than the same month last year, according to the latest data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) → view source.
Note, however, this only includes data from members of the association with a number of key car makers excluded. Vietnam’s Vinfast, for example.

That said VAMA’s sales report found that passenger car sales rose 28 percent month-on-month to 17,623 units, narrowing their annual decline to 29 percent.
Truck sales increased 14 percent from August and 26 percent year-on-year, reaching 6,704 units.
Bus sales fell 24 percent month-on-month and 37 percent compared with September 2024, while special-purpose vehicles recorded a modest total of 28 units.
Electric vehicles saw a small presence with 13 battery electric units sold in September (this was a new addition to the data with past reports not separating out electric vehicles so it might reflect a data collection issue as opposed to the actual reality).
Hybrid vehicles reached 1,371 units, marking 5 percent month-on-month and 31 percent year-on-year growth.
The September rebound followed weaker sales in August, possibly due to Ghost Month on the lunar calendar, by which superstition dictates large purchases should be avoided.

Vietnam’s auto industry is one of the fastest-evolving sectors in Southeast Asia, driven by rising incomes, urbanisation, and strong domestic demand.
Major players include Thaco, Toyota, Hyundai, Honda, and VinFast, which together dominate both production and sales.
While the market remains import-dependent for parts and high-value components, government policies are promoting localisation and electric vehicle adoption.
Hybrid and battery electric vehicles are gaining momentum, supported by incentives and infrastructure expansion, though internal combustion models still account for most sales.
Of note, Vietnam’s car production in August 2025 was estimated at 40,100 units, up from 37,600 units in July, a 37.1 percent increase year-on-year.
Moreover, from January to August 2025, cumulative production reached 302,000 units, an increase of 59.6 percent compared with the same period in 2024.
