Education and training sector in Vietnam records US$0.19 million in January FDI

In January, Vietnam’s education and training sector registered a total of US$190,000 in new foreign direct investment (FDI) with three new projects, according to data from Vietnam’s Ministry of Planning and Investment. This represents a decrease of US$400,000 compared to December, which saw US$600,000 in registered capital with five new projects.

The sector accounted for less than 1 percent of total FDI in January which was about the same in December.

Vietnam’s education and training sector has been evolving rapidly, driven by the country’s growing population, expanding middle class, and increasing demand for skilled workers. In recent years there has been a significant emphasis on improving the quality of education, with a focus on expanding access to both primary and secondary education, as well as enhancing higher education and vocational training. The sector spans from basic education to specialised fields such as technology, healthcare, and business management, with particular attention being paid to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, as the country seeks to foster a more knowledge-based economy.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) has played an important role in the sector, particularly in the private education space. International schools, universities, and training centres have been established, offering high-quality education and attracting both domestic and foreign students. Additionally, partnerships between local institutions and foreign educational organisations have helped improve the curriculum and educational standards. As the Vietnamese economy continues to grow, there is an increasing demand for a highly educated workforce, which has spurred growth in vocational and technical training, especially in urban areas.

Despite its successes, the sector faces challenges such as unequal access to quality education between urban and rural areas, and the need for greater investment in infrastructure and teacher training. The increasing shift towards digital learning and online education platforms presents opportunities for the sector to modernise and reach a wider audience. With continued investment and reforms, Vietnam’s education and training sector is set to continue evolving, playing a key role in the country’s long-term economic development.
