Beer and malt production in Vietnam sees slight annual growth despite January decline

Vietnam’s beer and malt production increased by 75.2 percent in January compared to the 2019 baseline, according to Vietnam’s Industrial Production Index. However, this was lower than December 2024, when output stood at 99.3 percent above 2019 levels.

Month-on-month, production fell by 12.7 percent in January compared to December. Despite this, the sector recorded a slight 0.7 percent year-on-year increase from January 2024, indicating stable demand.

Beer and malt production in Vietnam is a major segment of the country’s beverage industry, driven by strong domestic demand and a growing export market. Vietnam is one of the largest beer consumers in Southeast Asia, making beer production a key contributor to the economy.

The country is home to both international and local beer producers. Major global brands such as Heineken, AB InBev, and Carlsberg have established production facilities in Vietnam, benefiting from the country’s expanding consumer base. Local brands such as Sabeco (Saigon Beer), Habeco (Hanoi Beer), and THP Group are also dominant players, producing a variety of lagers and specialty beers that cater to different market segments.

Malt production, which supplies the beer industry, is less developed, with much of the malt used in brewing being imported. However, there has been growing investment in domestic malt production to support the increasing demand for locally sourced ingredients.

Despite its success, the beer industry faces challenges, including rising production costs, changing consumer preferences, and stricter government regulations on alcohol consumption. The market is also becoming more competitive, with craft breweries and premium beer brands gaining popularity.

Vietnam’s beer and malt production industry continues to grow, fueled by high domestic consumption and investment from international and local brewers. With increasing demand for both mass-market and premium beers, the sector is expected to remain a key part of the country’s beverage industry.
