Wheat: Vietnam Imports Plummet 56.17 Percent in May, Brazil’s Absence Looms Large

Vietnam’s imports of wheat reached US$91.04 million in May 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents a drastic decrease of 56.17 percent compared to April, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) import value to US$728.97 million.

Brazil’s complete absence is the major factor in the sharp decline:

Brazil, which was a significant supplier in April, recorded no imports in May, representing a 100 percent month-on-month decrease and accounting for a considerable 34.90 percent of the YTD total. This complete halt in Brazilian imports is the primary driver behind the overall sharp decline.

Australia, Canada, and Russia also see substantial drops:

Imports from Australia, another major supplier, decreased by 60.19 percent to US$25.90 million. Canada saw an almost complete halt in imports, with an 88.89 percent decrease. Russia’s imports also fell significantly by 83.29 percent. Ukraine also recorded no imports in May after having imports in April.

USA bucks the trend with strong growth:

Conversely, the USA was the only major supplier to show significant growth, with imports surging by 60.01 percent to US$47.74 million in May. This makes the USA the top supplier for the month and a growing contributor to the YTD total at 12.76 percent. The “Other” category saw a substantial decrease of 63.29 percent.

The overall dramatic decrease in May’s wheat imports highlights a significant disruption in Vietnam’s sourcing, primarily due to the complete absence of Brazilian supply, which was not fully offset by increased imports from the USA.
