Vietnam’s processed seafood output rises 7.1 percent year-on-year in March

Vietnam’s processed seafood production reached 568,100 tons in March, up from 503,900 tons in February. Total output for the first quarter stood at 1,557,900 tons, reflecting an 11.9 percent increase compared to March 2024 and a 7.1 percent rise year-on-year, according to data from the General Statistics Office.

Vietnam’s processed seafood production is a vital segment of the country’s economy, driven by its extensive coastline, abundant marine resources, and strong export demand. The country is one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of seafood, particularly shrimp, fish, and mollusks, with processed seafood being a key contributor to these export volumes.

Vietnam produces a wide variety of processed seafood products, including frozen, canned, and dried fish, shrimp, squid, and other marine products. The country’s shrimp industry is one of the most prominent, with frozen shrimp being a major export to markets like the United States, Japan, and the European Union. Fish, including species like pangasius, tuna, and mackerel, is also widely processed into fillets, canned products, and surimi for export.

The seafood processing industry in Vietnam benefits from well-established infrastructure, including processing plants located in major seafood hubs such as the Mekong Delta and coastal regions. These plants are equipped with modern processing technologies that enable the country to produce high-quality, value-added seafood products. The industry also focuses on meeting international food safety and quality standards, which has helped boost exports to major markets around the world.

Despite its success, the industry faces challenges such as fluctuations in raw material supply, environmental sustainability concerns related to overfishing and aquaculture practices, and rising competition from other seafood-producing nations. To address these challenges, Vietnam has been working to improve sustainability practices, increase traceability, and enhance the value-added production of processed seafood products.

In conclusion, Vietnam’s processed seafood production is a key component of its export economy, with a wide range of products serving global markets. The industry is poised for continued growth, supported by investments in processing technologies and sustainability practices, which will help maintain Vietnam’s position as a leading player in the global seafood trade.
