Vietnam’s mobile phone production estimated to reach 192.3 million pieces in 2024

Vietnam’s mobile phone production for December 2024 is projected to be 16.9 million pieces, with an estimated total of 192.3 million pieces for the entire year, according to Vietnam’s General Office of Statistics. This represents a year-on-year decrease of 4.2 percent compared to 2023, indicating some challenges in the sector.

In November 2024, the country produced 16.9 million pieces of mobile phones, maintaining steady output despite a slight decline in December.

Vietnam’s mobile phone production has emerged as one of the country’s most important manufacturing sectors, driven by both domestic demand and significant export growth. The country has become a global hub for mobile phone assembly, largely due to investments from major international companies, particularly Samsung, LG, and more recently, local companies such as VinFast, which are expanding into the mobile tech space.

Samsung is the largest player in Vietnam’s mobile phone production, with the company operating massive assembly plants in Bac Ninh and Thai Nguyen provinces. These facilities produce millions of smartphones each year, making Vietnam one of the largest producers of mobile phones globally. Samsung has not only boosted Vietnam’s export numbers but has also played a role in developing the local supply chain, with numerous Vietnamese suppliers providing parts and components for mobile devices.

In addition to Samsung, LG and various Chinese brands have contributed to mobile phone manufacturing in Vietnam, with local firms producing affordable models that cater to both domestic and regional markets. The increasing use of smartphones, driven by a young, tech-savvy population, has also fueled domestic demand.

Vietnam’s mobile phone production benefits from a competitive workforce, lower labour costs compared to other regional manufacturing hubs, and the country’s growing role in global supply chains. However, challenges such as competition from other Southeast Asian nations, fluctuations in the cost of raw materials, and the impact of global trade tensions can influence the industry’s growth.

As technology evolves, including the rise of 5G and electric smartphones, Vietnam’s mobile phone production sector is expected to continue expanding, attracting further investment and contributing significantly to the country’s export-oriented economy.
