Vietnam’s imports of plastics decreased by 21.87 percent month-on-month in January, reaching US$871.70 million, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This follows a decline from US$1.12 billion recorded in December.
Year-to-date, Vietnam’s total imports of plastics stood at US$871.70 million. China remained the largest supplier, contributing US$255.02 million, or 29.3 percent of the total, followed by South Korea with US$164.63 million, representing 18.9 percent, and Taiwan with US$96.49 million.
Among major suppliers, Russia recorded the highest month-on-month growth, increasing by 37.87 percent. Sweden also saw an increase of 74.19 percent. In contrast, the Philippines saw the steepest decline, with imports falling 86.36 percent. Other suppliers such as Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and Malaysia experienced significant drops of 25.84 percent, 40.07 percent, and 33.86 percent, respectively.
The plastic products market in Vietnam continues to rely heavily on China, which accounted for nearly 30 percent of total imports. While Russia and Sweden showed growth, overall imports from most suppliers declined, indicating changing sourcing patterns and weaker demand for plastics.
