Vietnam’s cement production estimated to reach 184.2 million tons in 2024

Vietnam’s cement production for December 2024 is projected to be 17.2 million tons, with an estimated total of 184.2 million tons for the entire year, according to Vietnam’s General Office of Statistics. This reflects a year-on-year increase of 3.5 percent compared to 2023, demonstrating steady growth in the sector.

In November 2024, the country produced 17.1 million tons of cement, showing consistent output despite a slight increase in December.

Vietnam’s cement production is a key pillar of the country’s industrial sector, driven by the rapid pace of urbanisation, infrastructure development, and the construction boom. As one of the largest producers of cement in Southeast Asia, Vietnam plays a critical role in both domestic supply and regional exports. The industry is dominated by a mix of state-owned enterprises, such as the Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (VICEM), and private companies, including major players like Holcim Vietnam, and local producers such as Thanh Thang Group.

The cement industry in Vietnam has expanded significantly in recent decades, with production largely concentrated in the northern and central regions, where limestone, the main raw material, is abundant. Vietnam’s cement production capacity has reached tens of millions of tons annually, making it one of the top cement producers in the world. The cement is used extensively in infrastructure projects, residential and commercial construction, and the growing demand for roads, bridges, and public utilities.

Vietnam also exports cement to several markets, including neighboring countries like Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar, as well as markets further afield, such as Africa and the Middle East. However, the domestic market is the primary focus, with the construction boom fueled by urban expansion, industrialisation, and government infrastructure programs.

The sector faces challenges related to environmental impact, as cement production is energy-intensive and a significant emitter of carbon dioxide. To address this, the Vietnamese government is promoting energy efficiency in cement production, with many companies investing in cleaner technologies and alternative raw materials, such as fly ash, to reduce emissions. The cement industry is expected to continue growing in line with the country’s development, although environmental concerns and sustainability remain central to its future.
