Vietnam’s aluminum production estimated to reach 1.52 million tons in 2024

Vietnam’s aluminum production for December 2024 is projected to be 134,100 tons, with an estimated total of 1.52 million tons for the entire year, according to Vietnam’s General Office of Statistics. This represents a year-on-year increase of 0.9 percent compared to 2023, reflecting stable growth in the sector.

In November 2024, the country produced 125,800 tons of aluminum, showing consistent output despite a slight increase in December.

Vietnam’s aluminum production is a significant part of the country’s industrial sector, driven by the demand for aluminum in various industries such as construction, automotive, packaging, and electronics. While Vietnam is not a major global producer of primary aluminum compared to countries like China or Russia, it has been steadily growing its production capacity and positioning itself as a regional player in the aluminum industry.

The majority of Vietnam’s aluminum production focuses on downstream processing, including the production of aluminum sheets, coils, and extrusions. These products are used extensively in the construction sector for windows, doors, and facades, as well as in the automotive and electronics industries. Companies such as the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) and local firms like Tan Rai Aluminum Company are involved in extracting and processing bauxite, the raw material for aluminum production.

The country’s bauxite reserves, primarily located in the Central Highlands, provide the raw material for aluminum production. However, Vietnam has faced challenges in developing the bauxite-to-aluminum value chain efficiently, including concerns over environmental impact, high production costs, and the technical challenges of processing bauxite into aluminum. The Tan Rai and Nhan Co aluminum plants, which have faced difficulties in achieving full operational capacity, are part of the government’s broader strategy to develop the aluminum industry.

Despite these challenges, the government continues to invest in improving the sector’s competitiveness by enhancing technology and promoting the development of a domestic supply chain. Additionally, Vietnam is looking to increase its focus on aluminum recycling and sustainable production practices to meet growing demand for eco-friendly materials. As demand for aluminum continues to rise, especially in the context of construction and green technologies, Vietnam’s aluminum production industry is expected to grow, contributing to its broader industrial and economic development goals.
