Vietnam imported crude oil to the tune of US$716 million in April, up from US$550 million in March, a change of 30.24 percent, according to preliminary data from Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.
Year to date, Vietnam imported US$2,396 million worth of crude oil by the end of April.
Nigeria accounted for US$49 million worth of Vietnam’s crude oil imports in April, down from US$87 million in March, a decline of 43.27 percent. Year to date, Nigeria has shipped US$156 million worth of crude oil to Vietnam.
Kuwait followed, though crude oil imports from the country fell to zero in April from US$426 million in March, a decline of 100 percent. Year to date, Kuwait has shipped US$1,333 million worth of crude oil to Vietnam.

Vietnam’s crude oil industry
Vietnam’s crude oil industry is centred on offshore production, with output led by mature fields such as Bach Ho, and managed primarily by Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam).
Production has declined over time as key fields mature, prompting efforts to sustain output through enhanced recovery techniques and new exploration.
Crude oil remains an important export commodity, though a growing share is increasingly retained for domestic refining at facilities such as Dung Quat and Nghi Son.
The sector faces structural challenges, including declining reserves, investment constraints, and exposure to global oil price volatility, while policy focuses on energy security and supply diversification.
