Vietnam imports from Kuwait up 12.88 percent March 2026 MoM / crude oil +12.03%, plastic raw materials +6.36%

In March, Vietnam imported US$434.82 million worth of goods from Kuwait, up from US$385.21 million in February, a change of 12.88 percent, according to preliminary data from Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.

So far this year, Vietnam has imported US$1,363 million worth of goods from Kuwait, largely concentrated in energy commodities.

Crude oil dominated imports at US$426.12 million in March, up 12.03 percent from US$380.36 million in February.

Plastic raw materials accounted for a smaller share at US$5.16 million, rising 6.36 percent from US$4.86 million.

The trade profile reflects Vietnam’s reliance on Kuwait as a supplier of energy inputs and petrochemical feedstocks.

Vietnam’s trade with Kuwait this year

In March, Vietnam imported goods worth US$434.82 million from Kuwait and exported US$0.37 million, bringing total trade to US$435.19 million and resulting in a trade deficit of US$434.45 million.

Two-way trade so far this year between Vietnam and Kuwait has reached US$1,378.55 million, with Vietnam importing US$1,362.79 million worth of goods and exporting US$15.76 million.

Dung Quat refinery Middle East exposure

Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical said its Dung Quat refinery uses 30–35 percent imported crude, though from West Africa, the Mediterranean region, the US, and only partly from the Middle East, (as opposed to the Nghi Son refinery which uses mostly Kuwaiti crude).

Binh Son has proposed prioritising domestic crude and condensate for Dung Quat and temporarily limiting crude exports through the third quarter of 2026 to ensure energy security. Read more→
