Vietnam car sales up 6 percent in 2025 over 2024: VAMA

Total car sales in Vietnam reached 42,701 units in December compared to 33,689 units in November, according to data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA).

Year-to-date, the VAMA has recorded 313,359 total car sales. This is compared to 295,979 units over the same period in 2024, a 6 percent increase.

(Note that these are sales for VAMA members only and that some other major car makers are not included. Vietnam’s VinFast for example.)

Passenger car sales in Vietnam reached 32,452 units in December compared to 24,604 units in November. Year-to-date, the VAMA has recorded 218,974 passenger car sales. This is compared to 220,295 units over the same period in 2024.

Truck sales in Vietnam reached 7,954 units in December compared to 7,071 units in November. Year-to-date, the VAMA has recorded 70,746 truck sales. This is compared to 57,034 units over the same period in 2024.

Bus sales in Vietnam reached 556 units in December compared to 612 units in November. Year-to-date, the VAMA has recorded 8,668 bus sales. This is compared to 7,748 units over the same period in 2024.

Special-purpose vehicle sales in Vietnam reached 89 units in December compared to 62 units in November. Year-to-date, the VAMA has recorded 778 special-purpose vehicle sales. This is compared to 1,036 units over the same period in 2024.

BEV sales in Vietnam reached 1 units in December compared to units in November. Year-to-date, the VAMA has recorded 22 BEV sales. This is compared to – units over the same period in 2024.

Hybrid vehicle sales in Vietnam reached 1,649 units in December compared to 1,340 units in November. Year-to-date, the VAMA has recorded 14,171 hybrid vehicle sales. This is compared to 9,866 units over the same period in 2024.

Vietnam motor vehicle imports

Vietnam imported motor vehicles to the tune of US$406 million in December, down from US$456 million in November, a change of -10.79 percent, according to preliminary data from Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.

Year to date, Vietnam had imported US$4,737 million worth of motor vehicles by the end of December.

Recent developments include:

Government inspection EV maker 

Hung Yen provincial inspectors included TMT Motors in a 2026 inspection plan covering investment compliance at nearly 100 enterprises, including its electric vehicle assembly expansion project.

The company partnered with SAIC GM Wuling Automobile in 2023 and sold 591 electric vehicles in 2023, 1,358 in 2024, targeting 3,404 units in 2025.

Automotive MoU Geleximco-China’s LeeKr

Geleximco has signed a cooperation agreement with China’s LeeKr Technology, giving the Chinese chassis-systems supplier a pathway into Vietnam’s fast-growing electric-vehicle market.

The memorandum of understanding covers advanced automotive chassis components and aims to deepen supply-chain integration between the two companies.

Hong Kong-Taiwan EV factory Northern Vietnam

A delegation from Hong Kong and Taiwan, with representatives from Chengling Automobile and Zhaoling Electric Vehicle, has proposed a factory investment of about US$500 million (VND 13.2 trillion) in Thai Nguyen.

The plant would produce electric motorbikes, scooters, trucks, dump trucks, trailers and specialised vehicles.

Vietnam’s motor vehicles industry

Vietnam’s motor vehicles industry has expanded steadily, driven by rising domestic demand, urbanisation, and the development of local manufacturing capacity.

The sector includes passenger cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and a growing focus on electric vehicles and supporting components.

Domestic firms and foreign invested manufacturers operate assembly plants across the country, supported by an expanding supplier network and government industrial policies.
