Vietnam’s imports from Australia rose to US$688.85 million in April, up 3.24 percent from March, bringing the year-to-date total to US$2.44 billion, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. The growth was driven by surging coal shipments and strong gains across key industrial and agricultural commodities.
Coal led the inflows, reaching US$264.08 million, up 12.47 percent month-on-month. It made up 39.30 percent of Vietnam’s total imports from Australia in April, reflecting ongoing demand for energy inputs amid high domestic consumption and subdued hydroelectric output.
Ores and other minerals rose to US$159.28 million, up nearly 10 percent over March, while wheat imports more than doubled, climbing 90.45 percent to US$65.06 million, highlighting Vietnam’s growing reliance on Australia for food security staples.
A standout performer was liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which soared 701.41 percent to US$13.32 million, albeit from a low base. Conversely, several key commodities posted steep drops, with other base metals down 33.76 percent, ferrous waste and scrap down 29.87 percent, and plastics falling 53.02 percent.
Despite some volatility, the sustained scale of coal, ore, and grain imports underlines Vietnam’s deep integration into commodity supply chains, with Australia playing a critical role in fuelling its power generation, steelmaking, and food processing sectors.
