Seafood: Vietnam fisheries products imports rise 5.17 percent in May

Vietnam’s imports of fishery products reached US$281.15 million in May 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents an increase of 5.17 percent compared to April, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) import value to US$1.31 billion.

India and Indonesia remain top suppliers with contrasting performance:

India was the leading supplier in May, with imports valued at US$38.95 million, showing a 7.86 percent increase from April. Indonesia, while still a major player, saw its imports decrease by 10.26 percent to US$38.83 million in May. They respectively account for 14.52 percent and 15.40 percent of the year-to-date imports.

Norway and China show stable trends:

Imports from Norway experienced a minor decrease of 1.16 percent to US$28.97 million, while imports from China saw a slight increase of 0.90 percent to US$20.54 million. These countries remain significant contributors to Vietnam’s fishery product imports.

Several countries record strong month-on-month surges:

  • Ireland recorded an astonishing surge of 391.85 percent, albeit from a low base.
  • Canada imports jumped by 200.53 percent.
  • Singapore saw a substantial increase of 146.29 percent.
  • USA imports grew by 58.36 percent.
  • Malaysia and Taiwan also recorded strong growth of 54.52 percent and 45.96 percent, respectively.
  • Philippines and UK also showed notable increases.
  • Bangladesh emerged as a new supplier with imports in May after none in April.

Significant decreases in imports:

Conversely, some markets faced substantial declines in imports in May:

  • Myanmar saw the largest drop of 77.51 percent.
  • Thailand imports decreased by 57.61 percent.
  • Denmark imports fell by 40.31 percent.
  • Russia experienced a decline of 37.48 percent.
  • South Korea and Chile also saw notable decreases.
  • Iceland recorded no imports in May after having imports in April.

The overall increase in May’s fishery product imports suggests a healthy demand, with dynamic shifts among suppliers as some experience strong growth while others face declines.
