Coffee: Vietnam exports dip 10.97% in May

Vietnam’s exports of coffee reached US$859.91 million in May 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents a decrease of 10.97 percent compared to April, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) export value to US$4.70 billion.

Germany and Italy remain top markets despite declines; USA sees growth:

Germany continued to be the largest destination for Vietnamese coffee, with May exports totaling US$137.01 million, although this was a 10.75 percent decrease from April. Italy also saw an 11.00 percent decline. Conversely, exports to the USA increased by 10.07 percent to US$62.18 million, demonstrating sustained demand from this key market.

Thailand, UK, Greece, and Singapore show impressive surges:

Despite the overall dip, several markets exhibited significant month-on-month growth in May:

  • Singapore recorded an astounding surge of 161.63 percent, albeit from a lower base.
  • Thailand exports jumped by 76.31 percent, reaching US$42.58 million.
  • Greece saw a strong increase of 62.99 percent.
  • The UK exports surged by 42.63 percent.
  • India also recorded a notable increase of 45.08 percent.
  • Algeria and France also showed healthy growth.
  • Ukraine and Hungary emerged as new export markets in May.

Russia, Spain, Canada, and Indonesia face sharp declines:

Conversely, a number of major markets experienced substantial decreases in May:

  • Russia exports plummeted by 51.78 percent.
  • Canada exports dropped by 63.42 percent.
  • South Africa exports fell by 68.68 percent.
  • Spain saw a significant decline of 36.52 percent.
  • Mexico exports decreased by 31.47 percent.
  • Indonesia exports fell by 58.57 percent.
  • Romania, Chile, Denmark, Laos, Finland, and Myanmar also recorded substantial drops, with Finland and Myanmar seeing 100% decreases for the month.

The May data for Vietnamese coffee exports presents a mixed picture. While overall exports declined, strong performances in specific markets like Thailand and the UK indicate a shifting landscape in global demand and potential diversification efforts amidst a challenging environment.
