Vietnam’s imports from Russia declined 15.82 percent to US$195 million in August, bringing the year-to-date total to US$1.70 billion, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.
Coal remained the largest category at US$66 million, though down 34.15 percent from July, and accounted for more than one-third of the monthly inflow.
Fertilizers rose 4.35 percent to US$23 million, while plastics surged 56.19 percent to US$9.4 million.
Pharmaceutical products jumped more than sixfold to US$3.3 million, while rubber imports grew more than fourfold.
However, fishery products fell 57.34 percent, ores dropped 70.57 percent, and iron and steel products plunged 60.62 percent.
Year-to-date, coal and fertilizers dominate Russia’s exports to Vietnam, making up just over 50 percent combined.
Wheat imports, although not recorded in August, account for 2.39 percent of the year-to-date value.
Smaller but rising flows of pharmaceuticals, plastics, and rubber highlight some diversification in trade.
Of note, Vietnam–Russia trade is built on a long-standing partnership, with exchanges covering energy, machinery, agriculture, and consumer goods.
Vietnam mainly exports agricultural products, seafood, textiles, and electronics to Russia, while importing petroleum products, coal, fertilisers, machinery, and defence-related equipment.
Bilateral trade has been supported by the Vietnam–Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement, which has lowered tariffs and expanded market access.
Energy cooperation, particularly in oil, gas, and power projects, remains central to the relationship, alongside joint ventures in mining and infrastructure.
