Vietnam imported US$949.27 million worth of plastic products in August 2025, down 3.1 percent from July’s US$979.49 million, according to Vietnam’s General Department of Customs.
Year-to-date imports reached US$6.89 billion.
China remained the largest supplier, shipping US$618.90 million, equal to 62.4 percent of the total.
South Korea followed with US$125.31 million, while Japan supplied US$82.09 million. Taiwan and Thailand contributed US$26.36 million and US$22.13 million respectively.
The US stood out as the largest non-Asian supplier at US$18.89 million, rising 13.5 percent from July.
European sources such as Germany, the UK, and Italy showed mixed trends, with France notably surging 45.8 percent month-on-month despite its small base.
Vietnam’s plastic products industry is a major manufacturing and export sector, supplying packaging, household goods, construction materials, and components for electronics and automobiles.
Growth has been driven by rising domestic consumption, rapid industrialisation, and integration into global supply chains.
Exports are concentrated in packaging and intermediate goods, with key markets in the US, Japan, and the EU.
The sector relies heavily on imported raw materials such as polypropylene and polyethylene, exposing producers to price volatility and trade fluctuations.
Domestic firms dominate lower-value products, while foreign-invested companies lead in high-quality, technical plastics.
Environmental concerns and stricter regulations on single-use plastics are reshaping the industry, with a gradual shift toward biodegradable and recycled materials.
Despite challenges in technology, recycling infrastructure, and raw material dependence, Vietnam’s plastic industry remains a strategic contributor to manufacturing, exports, and foreign investment.
