Medical and rehabilitation equipment production in Vietnam sees January decline

Vietnam’s production of medical, dental, orthopedic, and rehabilitation equipment and instruments increased by 57.5 percent in January compared to the 2019 baseline, according to Vietnam’s Industrial Production Index. However, this was lower than December 2024, when output stood at 84.6 percent above 2019 levels.

Month-on-month, production was down in January compared to December. Despite this, the sector recorded a 4.9 percent year-on-year increase from January 2024.

Vietnam’s medical and rehabilitation equipment production industry has been expanding, driven by increasing demand for healthcare services, rising foreign investment, and government initiatives to strengthen the domestic medical sector. The industry includes the manufacturing of medical devices, hospital equipment, rehabilitation aids, and diagnostic tools.

Many international companies have set up production facilities in Vietnam to take advantage of competitive labour costs and the growing market for medical equipment. Foreign investment has helped boost local manufacturing capabilities, particularly in the production of surgical instruments, hospital beds, personal protective equipment, and basic medical devices.

Domestic manufacturers are also growing, producing a range of rehabilitation equipment such as prosthetics, wheelchairs, and orthopaedic supports. The demand for locally made rehabilitation products is increasing as Vietnam’s aging population and healthcare infrastructure continue to develop. Some companies are focusing on producing cost-effective solutions to serve both domestic and regional markets.

Despite growth, the industry faces challenges such as reliance on imported high-tech components, the need for advanced manufacturing technology, and strict regulatory requirements. However, government policies aimed at supporting the medical device sector and increasing investment in research and development are helping improve local production capabilities.
