Vietnam’s exports of handbags, purses, suitcases, headgear and umbrellas reached US$411.05 million in May 2025, according to figures released by Vietnam’s General Department of Customs. This represents an increase of 4.45 percent compared to April, bringing the year-to-date (YTD) export value to US$1.80 billion.
USA remains top market despite slight dip; China and Canada show strong growth:
The USA continued to be the largest market by far, with exports totaling US$177.86 million in May. While this was an 8.43 percent increase from April, its YTD share remained significant at 42.08 percent. China and Canada both demonstrated strong month-on-month growth, with increases of 19.32 percent and 18.89 percent respectively, highlighting their growing importance as export destinations.
Russia and Singapore record explosive month-on-month growth:
Several markets experienced remarkable month-on-month growth in May:
- Russia recorded an astounding surge of 160.92 percent, though from a relatively lower base.
- Singapore exports jumped by 67.58 percent.
- Sweden saw a significant increase of 31.97 percent.
- Malaysia exports rose by 21.13 percent.
- Taiwan also recorded a healthy increase of 17.01 percent.
- Hungary showed an impressive 537.55% increase, albeit from a low base, signifying new or expanding trade.
Belgium, France, Australia, and Argentina face substantial declines:
Conversely, a number of markets experienced significant decreases in May:
- Belgium saw a sharp drop of 35.69 percent.
- Argentina exports plummeted by 34.56 percent.
- Australia decreased by 19.97 percent.
- France exports fell by 10.86 percent.
- Nigeria experienced a substantial decrease of 82.57 percent.
- Armenia saw a 100% drop for the month.
- Other notable declines were observed in Germany, Mexico, Denmark, Peru, and Switzerland.
The May data for Vietnam’s exports of handbags, purses, suitcases, headgear, and umbrellas indicates overall growth, primarily driven by robust demand from the USA and dynamic surges in emerging markets like Russia and Singapore. This positive trend occurs despite declines in several European and established markets. The sector is adapting to evolving global demand, with Vietnam aiming to maintain its position as a key exporter of these products.
